Devotions: White as Snow

“Come now, and let us reason together,”
Says the Lord,
“Though your sins are as scarlet,
They will be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They will be like wool.

Isaiah 1:18 New American Standard Bible 1995

This chapter is the beginning of Isaiah’s prophecy against Israel. They had rebelled consistently against God, followed pagan religions and committed horrible atrocities. God was done. They would pay for their sins, but as horrible as they were, they would not pay as they deserved, and their punishment was not permanent. There would be mercy. God is a just judge. He doesn’t remit punishment without cause or fair warning. He had been warning them for centuries. And still there was a chance at redemption. He gave them a chance to have audience in His court. That is what is meant by “let us reason together.” There were many times in Isaiah when He invited them to plead their case. He gave them the chance to repent. He even promised to completely wipe their sins away. God was completely reasonable.

Blood stains. It is one of the worst substances that can stain clothing. Back then, it was permanent and, on white wool, blatant. Even now our best stain removers cannot remove blood without a trace. Our sin is like blood. It stains dramatically and permanently. Only God is able to remove that stain, and He does it so completely that it is without a trace, as if it had never happened. But first we have to repent. We have to acknowledge that what we have done is sin, ask forgiveness, and then turn away from that sin.

God extends the same offer to you. He welcomes you to bring your case before Him. If you feel you have been wrongfully punished, tell Him why. He will reason with you. And if you repent He will forgive you and wipe your sins away. What is staining you? Have you been cleansed by Christ?
