Devotions: To Serve and Protect - True Greatness

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.

Mark 10:45 New American Standard Bible 1995

God’s kingdom is counterintuitive and countercultural in many ways, but probably no more so than in showing who is the greatest. In His kingdom, the greatest must become the least and servant of all. Jesus is the Son of God, the only one with a right to the throne. He actually had the throne, but gave it up so that He could come to earth, to serve us and give His life for us. That is true love and greatness, the greatest form of love. We are to follow His example and live to serve others rather than being served. If we insist that others serve us, we show that we do not have God’s love in us because we love ourselves more than others. We are not following Christ. To serve is the ultimate call of the Christian.

In the United States, today is Veteran’s Day, when we celebrate those who have served our country in the armed forces. Whether believers or not, these men and women show the love and greatness of Christ because they served others, those they didn’t know and even those who didn’t support them. They put the good of others above themselves and willingly risked their own lives. Not all can serve in this way, but we can all appreciate and be grateful for those who did.

Do you love others enough to serve them? Are you willing to humble yourself enough to serve another person at your own cost? What is one simple act of service you can do today to show the love of Jesus? Ask God to help you have a servant’s heart, to love others more than yourself. And if you have served our country, thank you! We honor you today!
