Devotions: Ultimate Authority

And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and made Him head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Ephesians 1:22-23 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Through Jesus’ work on the cross, He not only defeated sin and death, but also fulfilled the requirements of the Law (for forgiveness and atonement) and showed the ultimate act of obedience and love. It is because of this that God gave Him all authority. Jesus didn’t take it for Himself, that is what satan tried to get Him to do. Instead He fully submitted to the will of God the Father in obedience. That is why He has full authority. Satan wanted that authority, but he tried to take it. He wasn’t willing to obey or submit, and thus was cast out of heaven. It is because of Jesus’ obedience and submission that God made Him the head of the church, showing Himself to be fully worthy of that authority. He is not dominating, tyrannical or selfish, but loving, just and compassionate. He knew how to follow authority which made Him the best one to be in authority. We are His body and follow Him as our head, the bride for the Groom. He is completely, fully everything He should and needs to be. He lacks nothing. That is who we are to obey and submit to, the One who has all authority, who leads with love and compassion. What He does is for our good, not out of cruelty or selfishness, but wisdom and kindness, justice and mercy. Because He is fully complete, He is the only one who can fill us. Only He can bring satisfaction. Are you willing to submit to Christ as your head? Will you seek Him for true, lasting satisfaction?
