Devotions: What Child is This?

 

For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

 

This is one of the most well-known, widely used prophecies of Jesus’ birth. He is the Child and Son we received. The Son of God (also the Son of Man according to Daniel 7:13) was born as a human baby. He rules all creation and bore the weight of the Law, fulfilling it with His perfect life. He is our Wonderful Counselor, giving us guidance and help in every need. He is the Word of God, so in a sense the Bible is an extension of Himself left to guide and counsel us. He is Mighty God; no less God because He is also Man, He maintains His power and authority as seen in His miracles on earth. He is also Eternal Father, for though God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, they are also all one. He is also the Prince of Peace, coming to earth to bring peace not with the government, but between us and God. True peace can only come from Him through His sacrifice. How is He your counselor? How do you see Him as mighty God? What does it mean to you that He is your Eternal Father? How can He be your Prince of Peace?
