For
this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we
do not drift away from it.
Hebrews 2:1 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
The reason we are to “closer
attention” is that disbelief and back sliding, not to mention rejection of the
truth, carry heavy consequences and judgment. Everything receives just
punishment so we need to be very careful to stay close to the truth. We cannot
afford to fall away or start believing untruths and false doctrines. There are
so many false teachers out there who use just enough truth to make it sound
good, yet they are leading people astray. We need to stay close to the Word so
that we know what the truth is. We need to have it written on our hearts so
that we know instinctively what is right and wrong. That also helps keep the
line open with the Holy Spirit, so that He can speak to us more clearly about
the truth and we can follow His leading. It is also important to stay close to
the truth so that we don’t become complacent and slack in our own faith. We
don’t have to be led astray by false teaching, merely limiting our time in the
Bible and prayer will cause us to fall away slowly, to become numb to the
Spirit so that we can’t hear Him. Without knowing, we can drift away to the
point that we don’t care about the things of God, and even become angry when
someone tries to get us to participate in prayer or Bible study. It is
imperative that we stay close to the truth! We can’t afford to lose our grip.
Like getting caught in an ocean current, we may not notice we have begun to
drift until we’re too far away to get help. Stay close! If you have already
drifted, make every effort to come back, to spend time with God, and ask for
others to keep you accountable and pray for you. If you are still close, don’t
let go! Keep your grip tight. Don’t allow yourself to drift.
