God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom He also made the world.
Hebrews 1:1-2 (New American Standard Bible)
For the first 4,000 years (roughly) God spoke to His people through prophets. They were men (sometimes women) who had an especially close relationship with God and were anointed by His Spirit at that time. Back then, the Holy Spirit only came on certain people for a certain time. Hearing from God was a big deal. But then Jesus came to earth, and God dwelt among men physically for 33 years! And after Jesus went back to heaven, He left the Spirit in all who believe so we can talk with God always. We don’t have to go to a prophet to hear from God. We can go to His Word, which is in the Bible but also in our hearts. The author wanted his readers to clearly understand that Jesus is God. That is why we don’t have to have a prophet to stand between us and God anymore. We have Jesus. Jesus is the heir of all things, the Son of the King, and the Maker of all things. He has always existed as God. While it can be difficult to wrap our minds around the idea of the Trinity, especially since the Bible doesn’t use that word, the Bible is still clear that God exists in three persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and all three can be seen at creation (see Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1). Because of Jesus, we are no longer under the old covenant of Law and circumcision, but under the new covenant of Grace. We can hear directly from God and do not need a human to stand in for us. All because of Jesus. As you prepare to celebrate Christmas, keep that in mind; what His coming meant, the changes that it brought, and how it personally affects you.
