knowing
that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile
way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished
and spotless, the blood of Christ.
1 Peter 1:18-19 New
American Standard Bible (NASB)
In the old days, a person who
could not pay their debt was sold as a slave. That person could be “redeemed”
for a price. We were all born with a debt called sin, a debt that can only be
paid with blood. The Hebrews had to make an animal sacrifice for every sin they
committed, but nothing completely removed that debt. They remained slaves to
sin. Jesus came and died as the perfect sacrifice for all our sin. He redeemed
us from slavery to sin, not with something temporary and earthly like money, but
with His own blood. That not only paid our debt but gave us freedom from sin.
We no longer have to obey sin. We now have the ability to choose not to sin.
All we have to do to claim that redemption is give our lives to Christ: believe
in Him, His deity and sacrifice, ask forgiveness, and submit our lives to His will.
That does not mean we will never sin, but we will be freed from bondage to sin.
It will no longer be our master, instead Jesus is. Have you been redeemed? Which
master will you choose to serve?
