Be dressed in readiness,
and keep your lamps lit. Be like men
who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so
that they may immediately open the door to him when he comes
and knocks.
Luke 12:35-36 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
It is tempting in times of
waiting, to waste that time, to not utilize it, to think that since God doesn’t
appear to be doing anything we don’t need to do anything either. That is not
how we should be. It is not like a person sitting in a waiting room with
nothing to do. It is like a servant who is waiting for his master to return
home. There is still work to do and we need to do it, to be ready for what
comes. Sometimes, when God’s answer to our prayers is “wait”, the reason is
because we are not ready. If we do nothing in the mean time we will never
become ready and the answer will never come. We can use this time of waiting
for life to return to normal to spend more time in prayer and Bible study, to
strengthen our knowledge and faith, to fortify our foundation in Christ so that
when we do go out in the world again we are stronger and more ready for the
battle at hand. Notice this verse says to be “dressed in readiness.”
Preparation should be our clothing. We need to be alert and armed. When an army
is waiting for an invasion, they don’t spend their time playing tiddly winks.
They train, they exercise, they plan strategies and fortify their positions.
The same goes for athletes waiting for a race or competition. We are in a war
whether we realize it or not. We need to be ready for the battle when it comes.
How are you using this time of waiting? Are you ready for battle?
