If Your law had not been my delight,
Then I would have perished in my affliction.
Then I would have perished in my affliction.
Psalm 119:92 New
American Standard Bible (NASB)
The word affliction in this verse refers to trouble, depression or misery. It
does not denote sin or anything of that sort, just suffering in general. Anyone
who has been depressed, miserable or in great trouble knows how that situation
feels like it could bring death. The weight is almost unbearable, regardless of
the cause. Yet, the author turns to God’s law as his delight and relief from
his affliction. There is no reason to believe this affliction was the result of
the author’s actions, yet God’s law brought him comfort. This law was literally
the Torah, the first 5 books of the Bible considered the books of law. It wasn’t
merely God’s word that comforted him, it was God’s laws, His commands, proof
that He cares for those He guides. He cared enough to show us how to live so we
would not stumble and fall. It is a reminder of God’s faithfulness, His mercy
and grace, His love and justice. The simple act of reading God’s word, that
connection, brought comfort also, because it is connecting with God Himself.
His word is living and active, able to refresh us and interact with us. When
you are depressed, when you feel like giving up, turn to God’s word, find
comfort in what He says to you.
