In all labor there is profit,
But mere talk leads only to poverty.
But mere talk leads only to poverty.
Proverbs 14:23 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
Everything we do, no matter
what it is, will yield something. Even bad things we do yield something. But
only talking about something, while remaining inactive, yields nothing. We can
talk about all the great sewing projects we have lined up, and even have all
the materials, but if we never DO anything we will have nothing to show for all
our talk. We can talk about how good we are at what we do, but if we don’t
actually work we will have nothing. We can talk about how much we know about
God, but if we don’t spend time with Him we will be spiritually bankrupt.
Everything we do profits us in some way. But talking without doing is even
worse than having nothing. It is evidence of an arrogant and lazy heart. It
shows we know what we should do, yet we are unwilling to do it. Eventually,
people will disbelieve what we say and even call us a hypocrite or pompous
windbag. If we want to have, we need to do. Instead of talking, we need to
work. Talk alone leads to poverty both in finances and in spirit. Where do you
need to talk less and do more?
