The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing,
But the soul of the diligent is made fat.
But the soul of the diligent is made fat.
Proverbs 13:4 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
The lazy want yet have
nothing. The word translated diligent can also be translated as a threshing
sledge, mined gold or determination. It comes from a word meaning to cut into
or decide. So whether figuratively (diligent or determined) or literally (an
object/product of work) speaking, this person has plenty because he acts. He
works and is made fat from the profits of what he does. It is logically, one
gets what one needs by working for it. If one doesn’t work for something they
won’t get it. Merely wanting something will not produce it. Elsewhere in
Proverbs it says that those who don’t work shouldn’t eat. We get what we
deserve. We reap what we sow. The lazy earn nothing and therefore should have
nothing. This applies spiritually as well as physically. If we don’t seek God,
read the Bible and apply what we have learned, our souls will be weak and
malnourished. And unlike food or money, no one can give it to us if we are in
want. I think that is really what this verse is getting at. Our souls crave,
but if we don’t work to satisfy that craving with God, we will not be
satisfied. But those who are diligent in their time with God will be more than
satisfied. They will be satiated. Is your soul satisfied? Do you crave but
don’t work to fulfill your craving? Or perhaps you fill your cravings with the
wrong things? Seek to diligently spend time with God so that you may be filled.
