Older
men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance.
Titus 2:2 New
American Standard Bible (NASB)
Titus was a young prodigy of
Paul’s in charge of the church in Crete . Paul
wrote this letter to instruct him how a church should operate. The second
chapter describes how different groups of people should act. Older men are to
be temperate which literally means to be sober, or possibly to abstain from
alcohol entirely. They should also be dignified or venerable which means to be
serious and stems from the word for worship. We worship God with our lives and
that is something we should take seriously. They should be sensible or of sound
mind and self controlled. They should not be controlled by their emotions or
appetites. They need to be sound in faith love and perseverance. Their faith
love and endurance should be whole, complete and healthy. All of this stems
from a heart which desires to please and honor God rather than seeking self
gain or glory. And while this is directed to older men, they are
characteristics we should all embody. Where does your character need
improvement?
