Devotions: An Honoring Character

Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.
Titus 2:3-5 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

In the same way that older men are to be honorable, sober and serious, older women are to behave reverently. The Greek word for reverent comes from two base words meaning sacred or temple and to be proper or suitable. Their behavior at all times should be fitting for something sacred, for our bodies are the temple of Christ. They should also not be gossips or addicted to alcohol. They need to control their tongues and appetites. Instead they need to teach what is good or beautiful in order to be an encouragement to younger women. Instead of spreading lies and rumors about others, they should teach young women how to love their families and how to control themselves. They need to encourage others to purity and holiness, to take care of their homes, to be kind, and to be submissive to their own husbands out of reverence for God. When we do these things we honor God, but when we don’t we bring shame to ourselves, our families, and our faith. The goal here is not to obey rote rules for no reason, but to honor God out of a desire to glorify Him. Is that your desire? How well does your life do that?
