Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of
death,
I fear no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
I fear no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
Just because God is our
Shepherd and He is leading us does not mean that we will not face trouble and
suffering. We will, but we also know that He is with us no matter what we face.
He will be there guiding and protecting us. We don’t need to be afraid of
anything we face or could face because He is with us and He is greater than
everything. No height, nor depth, nor power, nor life, nor death, nothing can
separate us from Him. We will not go through anything that He has not allowed
and is not walking through with us. We can trust our Guide and Guardian. He
guides through His rod and staff. Shepherds used staffs for guiding their
sheep, pushing their heads or necks one way or another to get them to go the
right direction. Rods were used for discipline. We need to be sensitive to His
guidance, sometimes it is only a gentle nudge and if we are not paying
attention we will miss it. We also need to accept and learn from His
discipline. Like a good Father, He disciplines us when we stray from Him, to
teach us what is right and what is harmful to us. It shows His love and should
bring us comfort. Do you yield to your Shepherd’s guidance and discipline? Do
you trust Him to take you through the dark times?
