You prepare a table before me in the presence of my
enemies;
You have anointed my head with oil;
My cup overflows.
Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
You have anointed my head with oil;
My cup overflows.
Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Psalm 23:5-6 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
We will have enemies because
of what we believe, the same enemies Jesus has, but God will vindicate us. He
will prove His love for you and your worth to Him so that none will doubt. It
may not happen right away, but it will, and it is better to let God show others
you are right than to try to prove it on your own. Anointing with oil has many
connotations. Part of that is showing that we are His, we are appointed for His
purpose and service, and we are part of the Kingdom of God ,
heirs of His throne. Another aspect is that sheep get bugs down in their wool
and it’s hard to get them out, so the shepherds would pour oil on their backs
to protect them from the bugs and sun. It is also a way of honoring a person,
showing adoration for them. God does that for us. He designates us for His good
purpose, He protects us, and He adores and honors us. Through God we have all
that we need. We have no lack of any good thing when we trust Him and believe
that what He has for us is best no matter our circumstances. Because of our
love for God and His love for us we will dwell in His goodness and compassion.
They will overshadow every part of our lives, but often we don’t see them
because we aren’t looking for them, or they look different than we expect. We
should seek always to be in God’s presence. Being in His house with other
believers should be one of our favorite places, but it is not the only place we
can be in His presence. We can experience it wherever we are. Are you open to
see the goodness God has for you in any form? Do you see the ways He protects
and honors you? Ask Him to open your eyes so that you can see every way that He
is your Shepherd.
