Devotions: Our Good Shepherd

He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside quiet waters.
He restores my soul;
He guides me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
Psalm 23:2-3 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

These verses follow the phrase “The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want” and they describe how He is our Shepherd and what He does. Lying down in green pastures is a metaphor for providing everything we need. He will always take care of us and we will not lack what we need. We may not always have what we want, and sometimes what God says we need and what we think we need are different, but we can still trust Him. Being led to quiet waters means taking us to quiet, peaceful places to rest. No matter what we go through we can rest content in the knowledge that He is protecting, guarding and leading us. Our lives may be in turmoil, but we can have peace and quiet in our souls. Our souls can often become distressed and even in pain, but God restores our souls. So often we look to the things of this world to restore us, relationships, drugs, food, shopping, but only God can heal and satisfy. The path of healing is through His law. He cannot restore us if we are disobedient, and repentance is the road to that restoration. God, through His Spirit, will lead us through that obedience and righteousness. He will guide us down the path that results in healing and peace. He does all of this for His name’s sake. We were created to bring Him glory and He will help us do that, but we have to follow Him. We have to trust in our Shepherd.
