Do
all things without grumbling or disputing; so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and
innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse
generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so
that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in
vain nor toil in vain.
Philippians 2:14-16 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
We are to be lights in this
world. How do we do this? First, by holding fast to the word of life, that is
the Bible. We need to hold firm to the truth of the Bible, and have that as our
highest authority in everything. No “wisdom”, truth, or information should top
the Bible. Another translation says to hold “forth” the word. We need to hold
the truth out for others to see, not hiding it, afraid of being criticized or
rejected. Second, we need to be careful we don’t grumble or argue with others.
Grumbling and disputing shows discontentment, and if we are discontent it shows
we distrust God or that we don’t believe His way is best which contradicts our
testimony. By not grumbling or disputing we also prove that we are God’s
children, that we are blameless and innocent. This means that we will be above
reproach among those of the world. This reminds me of Daniel, who was a godly
man in a pagan country, but because of his wisdom and godliness he grew in
power and influence with the king. Other men, jealous of his power and status,
tried to find something against him so they could accuse him and cause him to
not be trusted. But they could not find anything to charge against him. He was
completely upright and blameless. That is how we should be, so above reproach
that no one would believe a negative report against us. That is how we are a
light in this dark world. How are you standing? Do you hold firm and hold forth
the truth of the Bible? Do you avoid grumbling and arguing? Is your life above
reproach?
