And even if our gospel is veiled, it
is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the
minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of
the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
2 Corinthians 4:3-4 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
The previous chapter says
that the reason the gospel is veiled is because that veil can only be removed
by Christ. Those who do not believe in Christ and have His Spirit working in
them cannot see the light of Christ. They cannot understand the gospel on their
own. No matter how much we argue, no matter how persuasive our reasoning, we
cannot win a person to Christ on our own. Satan has blinded them through sin.
It is only the Spirit of Christ working in them which can change their hearts.
We need to be a light to the world, but we cannot change the world aside from
the work of the Spirit. This is encouraging for us in a way because the
conversion of any does not rest on us, but on God. Yet we still have a responsibility
to be a light to the world so that they can see the difference. We are
responsible only for our witness, not for the way it is received. We need to
shine out against the darkness of this world. How are you shining against the
darkness? Can others see your light?
