But a Samaritan, who was on a
journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, and
came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them;
and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of
him.
Luke
10:33-34 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
This is the story of the Good
Samaritan. In those days, Samaritans and Jews did not get along. The Samaritans
had intermingled with other races (which was against the Jewish law) and had
adopted or mixed their religions with others (the reason why intermarrying was
outlawed). As a result, the Jews looked down on them as “low-lifes” and would
not associate with them. In this story, a Jew was traveling between cities and
was robbed and beaten. A priest walked by and saw him but would not help. A
Levite (a descendant of the tribe of Levi who took care of the Temple ) also walked by but would not help.
Then a Samaritan came by, and not only did he help the man, but he took him to
an inn and paid for any care and lodging he would need. Jesus used this
illustration to show that it doesn’t matter who a person is, it is how they act
that means something. It doesn’t matter who we are, or who needs help, it is
our compassion that will show the world who our Father is. Ask God to help you
love others no matter who they are.
