Now as He
approached the gate of the city, a dead man was being carried out, the only son
of his mother, and she was a widow; and a sizeable crowd from the city was with
her. When the Lord saw her, He felt
compassion for her, and said to her, “Do not weep.” And He came up and touched the coffin; and the bearers came
to a halt. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise!”
Luke
7:12-14 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
“No parent should have to
bury their child.” (King Theoden, The Two Towers )
It is a pain without comparison. That alone is enough to draw strong
compassion. It is a sorrow that lasts for a lifetime and never goes away. Yet
there was more to grieve in this widow’s situation than the pain of losing her
child. The fact that she had also lost her husband (another terrible pain)
meant that her livelihood depended on her son, but that son was now dead. She
not only had no family, but no means to support herself. She was about as alone
as a woman could get. I believe Jesus felt compassion for every part of her
distress. He cared not only for her pain but also for her physical position.
And He provided relief for every aspect as well. He cares about the whole
person, not just the soul, not just the body, all of us. His compassion is
complete. Do you care about the whole person?
