Devotions: Soft Compassion

Thus has the Lord of hosts said, ‘Dispense true justice and practice kindness and compassion each to his brother; and do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the stranger or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.’
Zechariah 7:9-10 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

It was partly for injustice that God punished the Jews. He had warned them time and again to be just and stop cheating and abusing those who could not defend themselves, but they would not. So He disciplined them through exile. Justice is very important to God and it is something which He requires all of us to do. It is one thing for us to cry out against the injustice done to us or to others, it is another for us be unjust ourselves, but it happens. Any time that we put ourselves above another, serve our needs before someone else’s, or do something at another’s expense we run the risk of being unjust. That is why God hates selfishness, it leads to more sin. It isn’t fair. God wants us to focus more on serving others than ourselves, to care more about others than ourselves, to even sacrifice ourselves for the sake of others. That is what He does for us. In what way has your heart become hardened to injustice? When do you turn a blind eye to someone being mistreated? When do you choose self over others? Ask God to reveal these to you and soften your heart, to give you a heart like His.
