Devotions: Repentance and Compassion

“I will strengthen the house of Judah, And I will save the house of Joseph, And I will bring them back, Because I have had compassion on them; And they will be as though I had not rejected them, For I am the Lord their God and I will answer them.”
Zechariah 10:6 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

I never get tired of reading about God’s restoration and love for His people! He has that same love for us! After we are disciplined He restores to the point that the pain is beyond recall. He makes it as though it had never happened. How good it is to trust in the Lord! There is one thing we have to remember: discipline is for the purpose of training, teaching us a lesson. If we don’t learn the lesson, there will be no restoration. We have to truly repent: acknowledge our guilt, ask for forgiveness, and turn away from our sin. Then He will restore. God longs to have compassion, but our sin prevents it. Our suffering is not always due to our own sin, but it never hurts to examine our lives for any sin we are not dealing with. It is always worth our while to maintain a good relationship with God, to keep our account settled. Perhaps you are not suffering, but it feels as if something were holding you back, you just can’t seem to get where you are going in life. Take some time to evaluate your heart. See if there is any unrepented sin in your life. Deal with it so that God can lead you in the way everlasting.
