“I am exceedingly jealous
for Jerusalem and Zion . But I am very angry with the
nations who are at ease; for while I was only a little angry, they furthered
the disaster.” Therefore thus says the Lord, “I will return to Jerusalem with compassion; My house will be built in it,”
declares the Lord of hosts, “and a measuring line will be stretched
over Jerusalem .”’
Zechariah
1:15-16 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
This is God’s answer to
Jesus’ question: His wrath on Jerusalem
would cease. He would again have compassion and restore her. This appears to be
due, at least in part, to the overt cruelty and sin of the other nations who afflicted
Judah .
Cruelty breaks His heart. He hates to see it and He will not stand back or stay
silent. He promises to avenge. Injustice is something which He hates intensely.
Elsewhere in the Bible it is referred to as an abomination before God, for He is a God of justice. It
is one of His attributes. He will not ignore it, nor allow it to go unpunished.
He will also have compassion on those who suffer from injustice. That
compassion doesn’t just mean that He feels sorry for them. It goes far beyond
pity. Compassion requires both feeling and action. It is an emotion which
inspires action. With His feelings of compassion come His actions of
restoration, comfort and vengeance. Are you suffering from injustice? Whether
it is as a result of your sin or purely someone else’s cruelty, God will avenge
and restore if you turn to Him. You may not see the full effect in this life,
but know that He will not allow it to go undealt with.
