Then the
angel of the Lord said,
“O Lord of
hosts, how long will You have no compassion for Jerusalem
and the cities of Judah ,
with which You have been indignant these seventy years?”
Zechariah
1:12 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
It is believed that “the
angel of the Lord” is actually Jesus pre-incarnate. Jesus heard the report of
the angels sent to patrol the earth (vs 11) that the nations were lazy and
indolent. He begged the Father to have compassion on Judah , which had been in exile for
seventy years. This is a glimpse we see of Jesus as our intercessor. He is ever
before God pleading our cause, and His main concern is mercy; forgiveness when
we deserve punishment. Jesus is unchanging just as God is unchanging. He has
always been our Advocate. When we face punishment for our sin, Jesus is
standing before us asking God to forgive us for His sake. When the world seems
against you, when God seems against you, remember that Jesus is for you and He
will fight for you. Trust in the compassion of the Lord!
