Devotions: The God of Compassion

Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity And passes over the rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in unchanging love. He will again have compassion on us; He will tread our iniquities under foot. Yes, You will cast all their sins Into the depths of the sea.
Micah 7:18-19 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Anyone who has studied ancient mythology is familiar with the kind of god most civilizations created. They were basically exaggerated humans. Some didn’t even have any good qualities, none were entirely good. What god is like our God?! Not only is God all good, He is more good than any person we could ever meet. Pretty much all of the ancient gods were vindictive, but our God delights in unchanging love. He loves to show us compassion. He doesn’t delight in spite or vengeance. Instead of requiring everyone to pay for every sin fully, He willingly forgives and relents. Because of His compassion. That is the kind of God we serve. That is the kind of God we are supposed to be like. Remember that when you feel overwhelming guilt. Remember that when someone hurts you. Remember that when you see someone suffering.
