Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold,
I will restore the fortunes of the tents of Jacob And have
compassion on his dwelling places;
And the city will be rebuilt on its ruin, And
the palace will stand on its rightful place. From
them will proceed thanksgiving
And the voice of those who celebrate; And I
will multiply them and they will not be diminished; I will
also honor them and they will not be insignificant.’
Jeremiah
30:18-19 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
Much of
Jeremiah’s prophecies are hard to hear. It is not easy to read about our loving
God intentionally allowing such devastation. We tend to take His grace for
granted and assume that He is always gracious and forgiving, but that is not
consistent with His character. He is also just and there are times and
circumstances that demand His justice. But when His justice has run its course,
His compassion returns. He is not always angry or punishing. He is above all
loving and that will not allow His wrath and anger to continue beyond cause.
With His promise of discipline also comes His promise of restoration. He
promises to restore once the lesson has been learned. Not only does He remove
the trouble and hard times, but often what follows is better than what came
before. We only need to be faithful, trusting and patient. We need to learn and
yield to Him. We need to heed His warnings and wait for His restoration.
Discipline and suffering are never pointless. They always have a purpose if we
will surrender them and ourselves to God. We have to be willing to go through
the fire in order to gain the crown! Don’t give up!
