‘Do not be
afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you are now fearing; do
not be afraid of him,’ declares the Lord,
‘for I am with you to save you and deliver you from his hand. I will also show you compassion, so that he will have
compassion on you and restore you to your own soil.’
Jeremiah
42:11-12 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
At this point, Judah had already
been conquered and only a remnant of the poor remained. They were, of course,
afraid of the Babylonians who had taken the rest captive and were considering
going to Egypt
as refugees. God told them not to go, but to rather trust Him, to not seek the
security and protection of men but to instead trust in the Lord. He is not only
Lord over them, but over all. He can change the hearts of men to do what He
wants. He promised that if they stayed He would cause the King to have
compassion on them. Sadly, they would not trust in God. They trusted in their
own understanding and the way that seemed best to them. They not only forsook
the help of God, but also the compassion He offered. We have a choice. God
promises compassion if we trust Him, but if we don’t trust in Him alone we
forfeit both His help and His compassion. He is loving, He desires to have
compassion and restore us from our sin and suffering, but we have to choose the
path to restoration that He prescribes. There is no other way. Are you afraid?
Are you suffering or in sin? Turn to God, the only Healer, Protector and
Redeemer. He will help you. He will have compassion. He has promised to, but
you have to turn to Him. Choose the way of life through your God!
