Devotions: A Compassionate Warning

then say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Behold I am about to fill all the inhabitants of this land—the kings that sit for David on his throne, the priests, the prophets and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem—with drunkenness! I will dash them against each other, both the fathers and the sons together,” declares the Lord. “I will not show pity nor be sorry nor have compassion so as not to destroy them.”’”
Listen and give heed, do not be haughty,
For the Lord has spoken.
Jeremiah 13:13-15 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

This prophecy came before Jerusalem was overthrown and exiled. It was a stark warning for them to correct their ways, to return to Him and repent. They were proud and arrogant. They believed that they were good enough as they were, that their sin wasn’t a big deal. But they were terribly mistaken. This is an example of a time when God did not have compassion. God is above all holy, and His holiness cannot tolerate sin. He is perfectly just and sometimes that justice trumps compassion and grace. God waits patiently for His people to learn on their own, to turn from their sin and follow Him, but there comes a time when He must exact judgment and discipline in order to correct waywardness and sin. The people had been told repeatedly for centuries to change, to repent, but they refused. They ignored His Word and His warnings. How often do we do that? How often do we ignore or excuse our sin? How often do we refuse to repent or change our ways and follow God instead? Take this warning! Listen to these words and act upon them, do not be arrogant. Humble yourself before the Lord and live!
