We love, because He first loved us.
1 John 4:19 New American Standard
Bible 1995
Our love comes from God. He
is love, so all true love comes from Him and is evidence of being made in His
image. We could not love if we were not like Him, but we could also not love
unless He loved us first. His act of love, the greatest possible, by
sacrificing Himself for us to atone for our sin, made it possible for us to
love others. We could not do it without His love for us. We could not do
anything good without His sacrifice. Only His death and resurrection could make
it possible for us to have peace with God and to grow in godliness. Yes, we
have affection for others, but we could not truly love them if He didn’t love
first. His love predates any and all human emotion or action. Of course, Jesus’
sacrifice did not happen before creation, but God’s love did, and His plan for
salvation was made before He laid the foundations of the world. He did
everything because of His love for us, because He wanted relationship with us.
That is why we were created, and why He was willing to die for us, so that we
could still spend eternity with Him. Nothing we do could ever come before, or
be better than, what God has done for us. His love came first, His joy came
first, His sacrifice came first. Ours is only a shadowy reflection of the
truth, a mediocre copy of what is perfect and real.
Do you know God’s love for
you? Are you aware of just how much He loves you and what He gave up for you?
