Devotions: Faithful to Infinity and Beyond!

Your lovingkindness, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.

Psalm 36:5 New American Standard Bible 1995

The word “lovingkindness” is translated from the Hebrew hesed which is a very special word. It is more than just love or mercy. It conveys the steadfast love of God; His perfect, constant, endless, continuous love and kindness. The phrase “extends to the heavens” actually comes from one word meaning lofty. The skies (often referred to biblically as the heavens) are lofty, i.e. high up. Yet, I think this could also mean that God’s love is lofty, not just in its reach but its content. It reminds me of a love song from my younger days that talked about their affection for someone being “so high above me.” It is so great we cannot fathom it. It is great in size, but also in quality.

The next line expands on these ideas. The word faithfulness literally means firmness, security or fidelity (depending on context.) God is faithful. He is firm in His commitment to us. We can find security in His love for us and our relationship with Him. He is faithful to our relationship as a spouse should be, better even than the best spouse. His faithfulness is as far as the firmament. Remember this was before they knew about the atmosphere, so in their way of thinking, this basically meant “to infinity and beyond.” Again I believe this refers to its quality as well as its size. That is how great God’s faithfulness is. That is how much He loves us and is committed to us.

Are you aware of God’s love for you? Do you realize just how much He loves you? Have you thought about His faithfulness to you? Spend some time just pondering those ideas. Let them sink in to your heart and soul.
