He will cover you with His pinions,
And under His wings you may seek
refuge;
His faithfulness is a shield and
bulwark.
Psalm 91:4 New American Standard Bible
1995
The word pinions actually means wings or feathers. Think of a mother hen protecting her chicks under her wings from the attack of a hawk or to shelter them from an approaching storm. When trouble comes, He will protect us. We can take shelter under His protection. He is the only One who can provide complete security. I love the way the New Living translates the last line, “His faithful promises are your protection and armor.” Think of knights defending the castle. God is both the castle wall keeping the enemy at bay, but also the armor protecting us from personal injury. God is complete protection, but we have to run to Him, to seek His protection and put on His armor. It is not that He has left us. If we are His children through faith in Jesus, then we begin (spiritual) life under His wings. If we are not there now it is because we have left, because we have tried to fight on our own or sought something other than God for security and protection. Only He can give us the protection we need. On our own, even if we are not killed, we will eventually be wounded. We NEED Him.
His faithful promises are our protection…He is completely, perfectly faithful and He always keeps His promises. That protects us because when we trust His promises, we surrender our lives into His hands and trust Him to get us through. They protect us from doubt and fear because if we believe and trust in them we won’t be turned aside or dismayed when trouble comes. That faith will keep the enemy at bay, and seeking shelter in Him will keep us from being wounded by harmful words or teachings because we will be grounded in His truth. False doctrine and hurtful words will bounce off of us like an arrow being turned by a shield if we know and live the truth. Lies only hurt us if we make ourselves susceptible to them.
If we begin life under His wings, we will be even less affected by the schemes of the enemy, just like living behind castle walls and living in armor. In our modern society that may seem extreme, but picture it more like having virus protection and an internet safe search on the computer to protect it from attack and the viewers from harmful content. It generally only works if it is in place before the attack.
Where do you run when trouble comes? To whom do you turn for protection? Make sure that you are grounded in God’s truth, about life and yourself, daily and regularly. Make Him your home base so that when trouble strikes you won’t need to run home because you will already be there.
