For just as we have many members in one body and
all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and
individually members one of another.
Romans 12:4-5 New American Standard
Bible 1995
The previous verse says that
we should be humble not arrogant. The reason is this. We are all members of the
body of Christ. We all have different functions, but all united in one body. We
are not all preachers or teachers. Our purposes
are not all to educate or preach. However, we all have the same purpose of
glorifying Christ and serving each other. Some in the Roman church were
gloating over others because they were seen as doing important things for God,
while others served in the background. This is wrong. Each and every job God
gives is equal in value, and many of the “high profile” jobs wouldn’t be
possible without the unseen ones. No one notices the janitor, until he doesn’t
do his job. No one notices the mom struggling to keep her house in order, yet
she is the one forming the hearts of the next generation. She is the one making
sure the next generation of pastors lives to reach that destiny. It is often
the least appreciated who are the most important. Instead of looking around to
see how we compare to others, we should be looking up to see how we are
glorifying Christ and making sure we are serving others as He wants. The best
place we can be is where He wants us. That is the place of greatest impact. We
all have different functions with the same purpose. We are in the body of
Christ and members of each other, to serve.
Are you serving God? Are you
where He wants you? Ask Him to help you fulfill your purpose, and to reveal
your function if you do not know what that is.
