For the sake of Your name, O Lord, revive me.
In Your righteousness bring my
soul out of trouble.
Psalm 143:11 New American Standard
Bible 1995
This is a psalm of David
asking for deliverance and guidance. He was being attacked and persecuted, and
longed for relief. Rather than giving in to despair, or acting in his own
wisdom, he sought God’s help. When he was overwhelmed by what was happening, he
remembered what God had done. He recalled God’s word and focused on God’s
miracles. Rather than trusting in men or himself to get out of trouble, he
relied on the one true God, the only One with power and authority to truly
save. He cared more about God’s name and glory than he did his own life. He
knew what was of eternal and lasting value, above himself. God was more
important to him than anything; that is where he took refuge, sought for deliverance
and guidance, and found his satisfaction and hope. That is what happens when we
delight in God, when He is our ultimate prize and focus. He was the servant of
God to the core. He knew that anything God did for him would not be a matter of
his own merit. He couldn’t earn anything God did or gave him. It was all out of
God’s divine will and love, His righteousness and mercy. David knew all of this
because he continually dwelt on God and reminded himself of God’s ways. Because
it was his practice in everyday life, it was his default in times of trouble.
What do you turn to when
trouble hits? Where do you instinctively run when you are distressed? Is it
God? Make it your daily goal to spend time with God. Make Him your priority in
everyday life so that when trouble hits, He will be your default.
