The Lord God is my strength,
And He has made my feet like
hinds’ feet,
And makes me walk on my high places.
Habakkuk
3:19 (New
American Standard Bible 1995)
This is the last verse in the
book of Habakkuk, a prophet, ending a song of God’s deliverance. He lived at
the end of the reign of Judah,
and saw where their idolatry and disobedience led them: exile. Though short,
this is one of my favorite books of the Bible. Mirroring David’s psalms, it
begins with his prayer to God for deliverance, mourning over the downfall of
his people. Then it transitions to trust in the Lord, no matter the
circumstances, and praise for the deliverance that would (but had not yet)
come. No matter how bad things get, or how depressed we are, we should always
redirect our gaze back to God. Why? Because God is our strength. He not only
sees us, but He is with us. He is not only with us, but will help us. Only He
can provide what we need, and protect us in times of trouble. Evil does not
have the final say in life, God does. When the Bible talks about “the hind” it
is referring to a doe (a deer, a female deer). The imagery given here is that
because God is our strength, He will lift us up. He will make us able to run
lightly and swiftly, able to leap over obstacles and move gracefully. He raises
us up to walk on solid ground that is smooth and level, stable and safe. That
high ground is God Himself. He is our salvation. If we walk in Him, our footing
will be firm.
Not matter what trouble you
are in, or the problems you face, God is your strength. He can and will lift
you up so that you can walk in safety. Trust in the Lord, who will never leave
you nor forsake. Hope in Him, because if you do you will again be able to
praise Him. Walk in the One who has conquered evil.
