Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he
will flee from you.
James 4:7 New American Standard Bible 1995
This chapter talks about
things to avoid, like pride. The previous verse says that God is opposed to the
proud but gives grace to the humble. THEREFORE we should submit to God. This is
not some archaic notion or fanciful theory that doesn’t mean anything. If we
are to receive God’s grace, if we are to stand strong against the devil, then
we need to humble ourselves before God and surrender our lives to Him.
Submitting to God means that we give up our ways and our rights and instead
live the way He says. We put Him first in everything. We value Him above
everything. That is key. We can have no victory without humility. If we try to
stand on our own we will fall.
Then, we must resist the
devil. Remember that he waits like a lion ready to pounce. He is subtle, tricky
and persuasive. We need to resist his temptations. There are only two sides to
be on: God’s or the enemies. There is no middle ground, no fence to sit on. Saying
that we are living our way is deception from the enemy. If it is not God’s way
it is treason. This is not a street to cross, but a battle field. If we stand
in the middle we will be shot from both sides. We need to be on God’s side and
wear His armor. If we submit to God and resist the devil then he will flee from
us. That is how we have victory. God will not force us, and satan will try to
deceive us. We have to be humble and vigilant, always attentive.
Are you willing to submit to
God? Are you wearing His armor, ready for battle? Ask God to forgive your
pride. Ask Him to help you be humble and vigilant.
