Devotions: Who Is God?

For who is God, except the Lord?
And who is a rock, except our God?

2 Samuel 22:32 New American Standard Bible

The simple answer to these questions is no one. Only Jehovah is the One True God. Only He is the Rock of salvation and refuge. This is part of a song David sang when he had been saved from his enemies, after he became king. I have a feeling it was a regular for him because it is referenced in many psalms. The song as a whole captures David’s entire theology and life philosophy, but this verse is what it all comes down to. God. He is all there is and all that really matters. As Christians, we would readily agree with that, but how often do we live that way? What gods do we worship besides the One True God? Instinctively we would say none, but that is not necessarily true. Sure, we may not bow down to an idol, but whom or what do we adore or desire more than God? When times are hard, what do we turn to instead of God? Idols don’t have to be an image made of wood or metal, it is anything that we desire or depend upon more than God. It could even be good things like family or serving church. If they are not kept in their proper place compared to God then they become an idol.

In ancient times, a rock often referenced a place of refuge, something solid that one could run to for safety that wouldn’t be tossed about by a storm. Our God is the only Rock, but often we run elsewhere when we are distressed, confused, scared or upset. It may be social media, food, coffee, music, etc. These are all good things in themselves, but if we run to them instead of God we need to be careful, for they will become an idol. Only He can provide the comfort, safety and guidance that we need.

Who is your god? What do you rely on or run to when you are distressed? Regularly take time to examine your life, heart and motives. Dissect your habits and patterns to see if there is anything getting in the way, anything not in its proper place. Ask God to help you deal with what you find.
