Little
children, let’s not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.
1 John 3:18 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
This comes in a chapter about
true love, not the kind of love the world gushes over, but true godly love.
God’s love. It comes from Him and He is the only source of true love. We love
because He first loved us. We gain it by accepting His love, and we can’t give
what we don’t have. This love is not emotional or wishy washy, but practical
and sacrificial. The previous verse says that if we have “stuff” and see
someone in need but don’t help them, then we don’t love. God showed His love by
giving His life for us, who are we to do any less? We need to live out the love
that we say we have. Like our faith, it should not be something that we only
talk about, but live and actively do.
Our love needs to be something that we act upon that is grounded in the truth
of God. Doing something that goes against God’s word, even if it is for a
person we love, even if they want us to do it, if it is contrary to God it is
not love but sin. Our love needs to be genuine, active and godly. Do you love
others as you should? Do you have trouble acting on what you talk about? Are
you grounded in the Word of God and seeking a relationship with Him so that you
can be full of His love and truth and can then give it to others? Ask God to
fill you with His love and truth. Ask Him to give you the desire to share that
love with others. Ask Him to help you be genuine.
