that
the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of
wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. I pray that the eyes
of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His
calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,
and what is the boundless
greatness of His power toward us who believe.
Ephesians 1:17-19 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
In verses 15 and 16, Paul
expresses his thanks to God for their faith and love for others, rejoicing in
their spiritual maturity. He prays that God will give them wisdom and
revelation of knowledge of Him. He is the God of glory. All true glory belongs
to Him, for He is the only one worthy. In this world of lies, deception and darkness,
it is important that we be equipped with God’s wisdom, which is very different
from and even contrary to the world’s, and an experiential knowledge of Him.
That is what he means by the revelation of knowledge; that God would reveal
Himself to them so that they could truly know Him. This spirit of wisdom and
revelation is the Holy Spirit, who alerts us to His path and ways. Paul also
prays that their hearts would be enlightened, that God’s light would open their
spiritual eyes to “see” the truth. He wanted them to know the hope of His
calling. This hope is that God fulfills His promises, especially that of
salvation. Going to heaven is the greatest hope we can have, and God has
promised to fulfill it. We can be assured of that if we believe in Him. We
should live every day in light of that hope which will lift our spirits when
the days seem dark. He also wanted them to know the riches of the glory of
God’s inheritance. This is not only the heavenly inheritance (part of our hope)
but also an earthly inheritance. We have God’s grace and glory while in this
life, a taste of what is to come. We don’t have to wait for heaven to receive
any of our inheritance. We get a bit of it now, enough to keep us going and
help fuel our hope and faith. This also exists in the form of spiritual gifts
and fruit, things which others will notice and cause them to glorify God. God
desires to bless us, better than the best of earthly parents, and does not hold
out on us before we get to heaven. God is all-powerful and He uses that power
in and through us. That knowledge is vital to a growing, flourishing walk with
God. It is what all the rest is based upon. God uses His power for our good and
His glory. Paul wants us to know and experience these things because they will
greatly grow our faith and trust in God as well as boost our hope and joy in
this life. All of this is necessary for a vibrant life in Christ. Do you have a
true knowledge of God? Are you assured of His hope and blessings? Do you trust
His goodness and power? Ask God to reveal Himself to you so that your faith can
grow.
