Devotions: A Promised Inheritance

In Him we also have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things in accordance with the plan of His will, to the end that we who were the first to hope in the Christ would be to the praise of His glory.

Ephesians 1:11-12 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Through Christ, we not only have salvation but also an inheritance. Before we believed in Him and accepted His sacrifice we were orphans, alone and hopeless, but because of Christ we have been adopted into God’s family as fellow heirs with Christ. We are His adopted siblings who will share with Him the inheritance of the King. This goes along with God’s plan and knowledge that predates creation. He knew what would happen and put a plan in place to save us. We were supposed to be His children originally, but sin separated us. It is only through Jesus that we can again become His children. We don’t deserve it, but He made it happen before we even knew we wanted it. Again, this is in accordance with His good plan. The Bible says that He does not desire any to perish (to not be saved.) That happens because that individual chose to reject Jesus’ sacrifice for their sins. The offer of salvation and adoption is open to any who will receive it. God knows everything and is in control of everything. He carefully and lovingly orchestrates everything to work out for the best for those who love Him. The last portion of this verse refers to the Jews, the first to hope, because they were the first to receive the message of salvation. The Gospel began with them for Jesus was born a Jew. All of this works out so that we will help others praise and glorify God. It may not work out the way we think it should, but it works out the way that is best, according to God’s plan. We need to trust His goodness and love when things don’t work out the way we want. Do you trust God to be good and loving toward you? How is the promised hope of His inheritance encouraging to you? How will these truths change your daily life?
