Devotions: So That You Will Know

You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord, He is God; there is no other besides Him.

Deuteronomy 4:35 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

This was written during the time of the Israelites’ exile in the wilderness, before they received the Promised Land. Many things happened, then and before, that were done purposefully to show them Who is God. There were a number of rebellions and uprisings miraculously punished or stopped so that they would know He is the One True God. In Egypt, before their deliverance, God purposely hardened Pharaoh’s heart so that the full fledge of plagues would play out, all for the sake of showing the Israelites who the Almighty God is. They had been living in a pagan land for over 400 years, and much of their religion had been forgotten or confused with other religions. It was imperative that God remind them Whom they were to serve. This happens now as well. God shows us things to remind us who the real God is. Sometimes it takes coming to the place where we only have God left, that we remember or begin to fully rely on Him. Sometimes these things are miracles, gifts that could only come from Him. Other times it comes in the form of discipline to teach us Whom we truly serve. God only allows us to experience what will draw us closer to Him. Do you truly know who God is? Do you worship and serve Him as you should, as He deserves? What can you change to make that happen?
