Devotions: God's Got This

And the Lord said to Moses, “When you go back to Egypt, see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders which I have put in your power; but I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go.”

Exodus 4:21 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

The story of Moses and the Exodus is probably one of the best known Bible stories. God sent Moses to free the Israelites from slavery, but Pharaoh refused to let them go and Egypt suffered 10 plagues sent by God. What most people don’t realize is that God is the one who hardened Pharaoh’s heart. Rather than have the Israelites freed without a fight, God wanted it to take some time so that He could show Egypt who the real God was, and to show Israel His power and glory. God could have made Pharaoh let them go the first time Moses asked, but He didn’t. It all happened according to His good plan, but only Moses seemed to realize that. The Israelites complained and even threatened Moses because he “rocked the boat,” making their work harder for the moment.

Everything God does and allows is for a reason. He is completely in control. But if we don’t take His goodness, mercy and love into account, we will begin to view Him as being cruel or malicious. We have to accept both His sovereignty and goodness at the same time. So even though things seem to not go how we think they should, life might even be pretty bad for the moment, God has a plan. He knows what He’s doing. He can see the future and knows the best course for everyone. He has full control over the greatest leaders of the world; Pharaoh, the President, everyone, God is in control. Do you trust in God’s sovereignty and goodness? Do you believe that He is working out a good plan for you? Do you rest in the knowledge that He’s got this?
