Devotions: Meditations of the Heart

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.

Psalm 19:14 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

This verse comes at the end of a passage talking about God’s law and commands, how good, perfect, helpful, and important they are. The psalmist then spends three verses asking God to remove any fault or offensive way from his heart, to be protected from arrogant sins so he would not be ruled by them. This verse is the end of that petition. Not only does he want to be kept from blatant sin, but he wants his every thought and word to be pleasing and acceptable to God. It is tempting to think that as long as our actions are ok, that we are ok, but that is deceptive. Our words are just as harmful as our actions, and can be just as sinful. It is by our words that we curse, gossip, slander and lie. Our words and actions are also the product of what is in our hearts. If our hearts have hatred in them, we will slander and commit murder. If our hearts are selfish we will lie and steal. If our hearts are jealous we will gossip and commit adultery. If our hearts are angry or bitter we will curse and hurt others. God is our Rock and Redeemer. He is the foundation of everything good, everything that should be in our lives. He should be our foundation and the place we find security. He has redeemed us from bondage to sin. He has cleansed and purified our hearts so that they are pleasing to Him, we just have to keep going to Him to have them repurified so that we continue to be pleasing to Him. He saved us when He didn’t have to. It is the least we could do to try to please Him in return. He showed His love for us by saving us. We can show our love for Him by desiring to please Him. What do the words of your mouth and the meditations of your heart reveal about you? Ask God to purify you, to lead you in a way that is pleasing to Him, to change your heart so it is like His.
