In
the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
In the beginning,
intentionally mimicking the wording from the first verse of Genesis, John is
making sure his readers understood what he was saying. He was stating that
Jesus existed from the beginning, like God, that He was not created, that He
was God. We understand from other verses in the New Testament that the “Word”
referred to Jesus. Later in this chapter, John said that the Word came to dwell
among us. It was vital for his readers to understand that Jesus is both God and
man, that He has always existed and held equality with God. Otherwise, Jesus’
sacrifice would not mean anything. The only way for His death on the cross to be
valid was for Him to be the perfect Son of God. John had to establish the fact
that Jesus was qualified, and therefore satisfied our debt of sin and God’s
wrath. Colossians states that Jesus took part in creation. He is the Word that
God spoke to bring all into existence. He is also what continues to hold the
universe together. He is God incarnate, the physical representation of the
Father. He has always existed, and will always exist. He is God and worthy of
all praise and glory. That is who we believe in, that is who redeemed us. How
does this change your view of Jesus? How does this affect your view of your
salvation?
