Devotions: The Abode of Silence

If the Lord had not been my help, my soul would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence.  If I should say, “My foot has slipped,” Your lovingkindness, O Lord, will hold me up.  When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, your consolations delight my soul.

Psalm 94:17-19

How true is that phrase, “my soul would have soon dwelt in the abode of silence.” You are not the only one to have felt so tormented, so lost, so despairing, that you almost could not voice or even comprehend the depth of your sorrow. There are others who have felt this way as well. Christ Himself felt this. You are not alone. Without God we have no hope—literally and figuratively. There truly is no hope apart from God. We feel hopeless and helpless when we are apart from Him. Not that He ever leaves us, but we can forsake fellowship with Him. But even in that, God is faithful. He will help us up. He will not let us fall. Trust in Him. Rest in His loving kindness and find strength there. Many times have I been bombarded with anxious, worrying, disturbing thoughts. It seemed as if everything would fall apart, that it was hopeless. It can be overwhelming. But if we spend time with God, He will renew us and assure us of His love and power. Our time with Him will be our delight. It may not change our circumstances, but it can change our perspective, our mood and our frame of mind so that when we are worried we can trust in Him and rest in His power and presence as we would rest in the arms of a loving parent. Let Him place you on the rock where His security will block the winds of worry.  Feel the warmth of His love.
