If we say
that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness,
we lie and do not practice the truth; but
if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have
fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us
from all sin.
1 John 1:6-7 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
We may call ourselves
Christians, but if we do not live what we say we believe we are liars and
deceived. We need to practice what we preach. What we say we believe should be
important enough to change the way we live. Jesus died to save us from sin, so
how can we say we love Him and have accepted His sacrifice if we continue to
live in what He died to save us from? Our lifestyles prove what we truly
believe, what has our hearts. If we walk in the light, if we live what the
Bible says, then we are proven to be followers of Jesus because we live as He
did. If we turn a blind eye to sin, if we excuse what the Bible says is wrong,
if we don’t care then we prove that we are not His followers. Instead, we prove
ourselves to be children of the enemy, because that is who we act like. This
does not mean that if we sin once we are liars and unbelievers. It refers more
to our lifestyle as a whole and our attitude toward sin. We are human which
means that we still have a sin nature. We will sin at times. What makes the
difference is whether we repent as soon as we sin and try to turn away from it,
or whether we make excuses and don’t attempt to get away from it. Those who
love God obey His commands, not to earn anything but out of love, devotion and
respect. Those who claim to believe but live in or excuse sin love themselves
and have no respect for God or His sacrifice. If our sin was bad enough that
Jesus had to die so that we could be forgiven, shouldn’t it be bad enough for
us to hate and try to stay away from? What is your view of sin? Do you hate or
excuse it? Do you live in it or try to run from it? Do you live in the light or
the darkness? Ask God to forgive you. Ask Him to lead you in the light, to help
you hate the darkness.
