Devotions: Why Work?

Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.
Colossians 3:23-24 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Another way to say heartily is “from the soul.” We are to do everything with all our heart, in the same way that we love God with our heart, mind, soul and strength. Whether we are feeding hungry children in the Sudan or ungrateful kids in the cafeteria, witnessing to the homeless or to our own families, working to save lives in the hospital or tax dollars in the office, whatever we do should be done to the best of our ability, why? Because the work we do should be for God. He is the one from whom we will receive our inheritance. He is the one who will judge us in the end. He is the one who saved us. We should live to please and honor Him in everything. We serve Him because we are His bondslaves, bought with His precious blood. We need to work for Him, not for men. The praise we get from men is the only reward we will receive, if that is why we do it, and it will fade far too quickly. But the reward we get from God will never fade. Rather than looking for instant gratification, look to eternity. Let that be your motivation to work hard with all your heart in everything.
