Devotions: True Love

Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.
John 15:13 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

The greatest love is sacrifice. Nothing proves a person’s love more than sacrificing self for them, doing what is best for that person at the cost of self. Only love could motivate a person to do that. Left to oneself, without the love of God, we would be selfish and put ourselves first. That is what happens every time we do what we want at the expense of another, love of self. It proves that we care more about ourselves in that moment than the other person. Jesus is the best example of true love. He has never been selfish. Not once has He put Himself before another. He always does what is best for others. That does not always mean that what He does will always make them happy, but it is always what is best for them. He looks out for their best interest, our best interest. He is our model, and we should love like He does. Frankly, if what we do for another person doesn’t hurt, it’s not sacrifice. Serving a person out of convenience is not love. The great thing about true love, is it is the hardest work we will ever love. Yes it hurts, yes it is hard, but if we truly love that person, we will willingly, gladly do whatever it takes. That is true love. Where does your love for others need to grow? Ask God to help you grow His love in you. We can’t give what we don’t have. Humble yourself before God so that He can grow you and grow your love for others.
