He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of
the miry clay,
And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.
And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.
Psalm 40:2 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
God is our Rescuer. When we
are in trouble He will help us. The thing with the pit of destruction, is that
we have to leave the path of God to get there. So the issue is not that God
abandoned us, or only comes when we are in trouble, but we have to stay the
course or we will fall away from Him. Even then, He will not abandon us. He will
not say that we have fallen one too many times. When we call out He will come
to our rescue and restore us. When we repent He will forgive and make us new.
He will put us back on the straight and narrow so that we will not stumble.
Interestingly, the word used for rock here is the same word used in other
places, including Psalm 18:2, which refer to God as our rock and fortress. So
the rock that God sets us upon when He rescues us from destruction is Himself.
We need to stay there, firmly planted on Christ as our foundation so that we
will not falter again. We need to stay in the fortress. That is up to us, but
we can rest assured that if we do fall He will be faithful to rescue and
restore us once again. On what foundation are you planted? Where are you standing?
If you have fallen, don’t be afraid to cry out to your Rescuer so He can return
you to the Rock.
