Devotions: Healing Broken Hearts

He heals the brokenhearted
And binds up their wounds.
Psalm 147:3 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

The word translated brokenhearted here literally just means broken, and wounds refers to pain, physical or mental. God is our great Healer who heals our brokenness and bandages our pain. Why are we broken and what brings us pain? That is sin. All that we suffer is in some way the result of sin, either directly (the result of our sin or the sin of others,) or indirectly (the result that sin in general has on this world, i.e. natural disasters, disease, etc.) We are all broken and in pain because of sin. If we were only affected by our own sin that would be enough to leave us completely broken. Yet we also feel the affects of other’s sins as well. That is a lot of pain and brokenness that needs to be healed and bandaged, but God is the great Physician. He is the only One who can give us true healing. All the well meaning advice and counsel from man can only touch our wounds. It is only through God that we can experience complete healing, and that is His promise. He will do it if we turn to Him, trust Him completely, and entrust our pain and suffering to Him to alleviate. He has promised to heal and also to bring justice. Our friends can bring us comfort, but they can’t right the wrongs. The courts can bring justice, but they don’t offer healing. Only God can offer both, and He does. Turn to Him. Ask Him to heal you. Let Him take care of your affliction.
