No
one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His
love is perfected in us.
1 John 4:12 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
Have you actually seen God
with your physical eyes? Nope, me neither. No one has for 2,000 years, yet we
can see the actions of God when we love others. That is how the unbelieving
world can “see” God, through our love. God cannot abide in a heart that doesn’t
love because He is love. When we love others, God’s love works in us, flows
through us and is perfected in us. It is part of the continual process of
making us more like Him, yet we have to submit to that process by loving
others. One might ask why that is a problem, but it is not only talking about
loving the people we like or have affection for, but also those we don’t. That
is real love put to the test, and that is the difference the world will see.
Only the vilest of people will not “love” those they claim care about. It is
generally easy to love those who love us. It is quite another thing to love
those who do not love us, and the world knows this. They will usually see that
as a good thing but few actually do it. Seeing someone who lives it out is a
great witness of God’s love and transformation to them. The key to this is
holding God’s love, absorbing it so that it does change you, rather than
letting it all flow right back out so that you are always empty. We have to be full of God’s love in order to
give it. Are you living God’s love? Is it overflowing to abundance in you, or
just flowing right out? What kind of witness does the world see in you?
